October is a month where empty buildings turn into costume warehouses and bare fields transform into pumpkin patches. There is an excitement in the air for the approaching holidays.
The spirit of Halloween takes on different meanings throughout life. As children it was fun to dress up as superhero’s and magical beings. It was important to go trick or treating through the neighborhood.
As teenagers it became fun to dress up with friends and express a different side of who you were. Parties and pumpkin smashing became popular events on Halloween. Rebelling against what was normal became common and almost expected.
Now, as college students, what do we do? College students can still dress up as princesses and Disney characters; they can be inventive, comical and even a little twisted.
Scary characters from the past are a popular costume choice on Halloween. Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers and the masked murderers from Scream are always a big hit. Now there are even more evil characters to choose from with the recent flux of horror films.
Funny costumes get their roots from all over. Popular hits this year are celebrity and reality show stars. Amanda Bynes, Miley Cyrus and Duck Dynasty are being displayed on shelves.
Other television shows that have popular costume choices are Walter White from Breaking Bad, zombies from The Walking Dead, and all the characters from Game of Thrones.
“The Great Gatsby,” “Hunger Games” and “The Avengers” all have multiple options for costume ideas.
As college students extra cash is usually not just laying around so buying elaborate costumes are sometimes out of the picture. There are lots of great costume ideas that people can piece together themselves. Just look through your closet and be creative. Have some crazy animal prints? Buy a pair of ears to go along with it. Have a pair of tight fitting jeans? Buy a cheap badge and a bandanna and that’s a cowboy costume. It doesn’t have to be perfect; it is about having fun.
There are several places in Downtown Fullerton, such as American Vintage or Stray Cat Vintage and Costumes, which sell costumes and accessories. Party City and Target have not only costumes but also an abundance of Halloween party supplies and decorations. Goodwill is advertising a huge selection for the whole family.
Whether buying an already made costume or piecing it together, don’t be afraid to have fun and get creative.
