Hornets rallied to win Homecoming game

Quarterbacks Kane Wilson and Ladarius Skelton showed they both have the ability to pass and lead their team to another victory, with a final score of 56-35 on Oct. 21.

This homecoming win continued Fullerton’s undefeated record to (7-0) while Saddleback is (5-2) overall.

The scoring began early for the Hornets. On their second drive, Sophomore Isaiah Webb ran for a 4-yard touchdown as he fought off two Saddleback tacklers.

Sophomore kicker Antonio Estrada’s following extra point was good which gave the Hornets an early 7-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, Saddleback came back to tie the game 7-7.

With the game tied Fullerton Wilson completed a pass to Jordan Huffman for a 6-yard touchdown putting the Hornets ahead 14-7.

Fullerton entered the second quarter up by 7, but Saddleback’s Max Gillman pass complete to Clinton Allen for a 30-yard touchdown. The score was not tied at 14-14.

Saddleback’s freshman running back Rome Innocenzi rushed for a 3-yard touchdown putting the Gauchos ahead at the half, 21-14.This was the first time that the Hornets have gone into the half trailing.

“We were not ready to play in the first half. They had a good scheme and they got us off our game a little bit, and it happens,” said head coach Byrnes.

At half-time, the Hornets honored the 1967 Hornets Championship team with a ceremony on the field.

Starting off the third quarter, the Hornets came out with the attitude to win. Wilson rushed for a 22-yard touchdown that tied the game 21-21.

Skelton rushed for a 27-yard touchdown and then a 2-point conversation that led the Hornets to a 21-29 lead.

They came out and scored 28 points in the quarter leaving the Gauchos in the dust. Wilson completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver Robert Downs, making the score 36-21.

“We had to keep our heads up and look at the bigger picture. We have been practicing all week and you cannot just come out here and lay down in the first half like we did,” said Skelton.

The Gauchos had a late surge and scored 14 points, but the Hornets defense was too much to overcome. The final score was 56-35.

“They got to stop making mistakes. We do things awfully fast so it is tough for quarterbacks to play in our system. We work on this every week and it is a learning experience.” Byrnes said.

The Hornets are on the road next week against Palomar on Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
