The Fullerton women’s soccer team came out on the wrong end against district rival Cypress College, losing 1-0 at home.

“Injuries during conference and the overall lack of substitutions played a huge factor throughout the season,” said Head Coach Pam Lewin.

“It makes it harder because fatigue is an issue and not having fresh legs of the bench results in tired players on the field.”

After a loss on the road at Santiago Canyon College, the Hornets wanted to come out strong, but scoring opportunities simply didn’t land, putting their playoff chances in jeopardy.

“We have a chance at playoffs, with the lose it looks like we would be pushed back in seeding. We were currently sitting at 13 overall, so we just have to see how other outcomes play out” said Lewin.

The first half of the game was controlled by the Hornets. They dominated all the ball possession and kept the Chargers from creating a chance at goal.

Fullerton’s only break at goal came when Freshman forward Brianna Remedios found room and took a shot at goal, but her shot went just wide keeping the score even at half.

When the second half began, Fullerton created an opportunity at goal off a deflected header in the box. When the ball landed right at Remedios’ feet and she fired a shot, but was saved by Cypress goalkeeper Melanie Hernandez to still keep the score 0-0.

Both teams seemed squarely matched, with the result heading towards a draw, yet Cypress broke the tie when a cross found Sophomore Forward Kristen Nolan giving the Chargers the 1-0 lead and probable win.

Minutes later, Fullerton looked for the equalizer when Sophomore captain Tatsiana Loscutoff created space and looked to take a shot at goal only to have ball slip past her foot.

With time running out, Fullerton had a chance at goal. Off a corner, the cross found Forward Remedios’ head only to have the ball hit the post and go out for goal kick. This cemented the 1-0 loss for the Hornets’ last home game.

“I had great time this season, the girls really came together as family and I don’t regret anything about the season,” said Loscutoff. “It was overall great year and simply amazing experience to play with this team.”
