Chris Lamm and Toni DuBois-Walker Memorial Food Bank is offering fresh produce and school supplies every Tuesday, from 12 p.m-2 p.m. and 4 p.m.-6 p.m. in Room 1955.
The food bank is open to all students in order to address food scarcity among Fullerton College students. With the amount of food that is offered, their are a variety foods that the staff takes into account to meet each students needs.
Thanks to the Good Samaritan Act, it can now offer fresh fruits and veggies that are picked up fresh every Tuesday. Recently, students have been allowed and encouraged to pick what they want instead of receiving pre-packed bags.
For students to receive food, they must be enrolled in at least 3 units and bring a picture ID to register. So far this semester has seen an increase of students attending, with a new record of 92 students coming in last Tuesday and the staff is still expecting more.
Food is the primary source available, but there are a few school supplies such as binders also available. Tea, coffee and a microwave is available for use to all students, if they need it.
“I hope the students know that Fullerton College cares, that their peers, students faculty and community care and that the community is there for them,” said co-founder Adela Lopez, she has been at the food bank since its start.
Donations are always welcome, particularly the food bank is asking for peanut butter, canned fruit, tuna, canned chicken, pastas, rice, flavored drinks, dairy products, soup, and individual snacks such as granola bars, pudding cups and apple sauce.
With Thanksgiving coming up, the food bank will be hosting their annual food drive, Nov. 20 from 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the parking lot outside of room 1955. The staff expects it will have a large amount of students present, since it tends to be their biggest outreach day.
The food bank has a very friendly staff ranging from faculty, students and public volunteers. Anyone can become a volunteer, the only requirement is that they attend a day of training before they begin.
“Working at the food bank has shown me that there is a need for institutional change at the collegiate level to meet the need of the students,” said coordinator Miles Aiello.
