UMOJA will screen Quincy Jones Netflix documentary

UMOJA will be screening to new Netflix documentary about the legendary Quincy Jones on Nov. 20, 2018 at 12:45 pm in Room 513.

UMOJA community mission is to collaborate with campuses at a local level so that there is integration with the particular college mission goals, strategic plan and student equity efforts.

“The event is part of our film series that we host throughout the semester. We took students to see The BlackkKlansman in theaters, screened a documentary called Let the Fire Burn (about the MOVE black liberation group),” said Outreach Coordinator Alyeska Gutierrez Estrada. “Our film series surround topics that are relatable or historic to the Black community.”

The Netflix documentary profiles music and culture icon Quincy Jones, offering unprecedented access to his private life and stories from his unparalleled career.

Aligning with the principles of the UMOJA Center, the film will help explain opportunities struggle, a greater understanding, and appreciation of how Quincy Jones used his talents to most past the walls presented at the time towards people of color.

During the event snacks will be giving out and at the end of the film,a discussion to talk about everyone’s impressions of the film will take place. UMOJA community hopes to create a free-flowing discussion where opinions and thoughts can be shared to help keep the conversation flowing.

“My greatest hope is that students will feel inspired to become connected and learn about Quincy Jones,” Gutierrez added. “Students should come out feeling connected to the UMOJA community and having learned some of the invaluable contributions from Quincy Jones.
