Fullerton lost to Long Beach, but make history in teams debut at last night’s game.

While the score doesn’t reflect it, the Hornet’s women’s lacrosse team won yesterday. They played their third career game as a team and first ever game at home.

“It’s exciting,” Head coach Pam Lewin said after the game.

The Hornets lost the game 9-6 against Long Beach State and their record falls to 1-2 on the season, but Coach Lewin was very proud of her girls’ efforts today. “For them being a team in the Division 2 bracket, I thought 9 to 6 is pretty respectful.”

The Hornets are currently in the Provisional Division, which is a step below Division 2, the same division Long Beach State is in. Long Beach State record improves to 4-4 after their win over the Hornets.

For the first half, it was a tight defensive battle. Long Beach controlled most of the game, but at the half, the two teams were tied at 2-2.

In the second half, Long Beach capitalized on their offensive opportunities and opened up the game. CSULB took a 9-3 lead over the Hornets and looked like they would cruise to an easy victory.

However, the Hornets refused to let the game get out of hand, as the Hornet’s freshman goalie Monica Silva made some big saves to shift the momentum.

Silva had 11 total saves in the game and after the game was really proud of her teammates’ efforts for their game and the season so far. “It’s been awesome how we’ve bonded together when we lost our 1st game, we all stayed together and didn’t blame anybody,” Silva said.

Despite the Hornet’s late rally to cut the lead and make the score 9-6 behind goals from freshman’s Regina Molina, Danielle Urtez, and Brianna Aguilar. FC would eventually run out of time, as Aguilar scored the final 2 goals for the Hornets.

Coach Lewin was proud of her team’s effort, but still points out areas where her team can improve upon, “Our defense is pretty solid. We just need to work on creating spacing when we’re on the attack,” coach Lewin stated.

Turnout for the first-ever home game for the lacrosse team at Fullerton did not disappoint. The crowd size exceeded 100 as they were cheering on the Hornets every time they made a nice play or scored a goal.

After the game, coach Lewin mentioned how nice it was to have such a big, supportive crowd there for their first ever home game.

“Players just keep getting better and better,” coach Lewin said.

The players themselves are enjoying the season so much and are getting better every day.

“The season has been really fun. I’m glad I joined the team, I have really enjoyed it,” Hornet freshman forward Taylor Hobbs said.

The game marks a very important day for the team, their first ever home game and coach Lewin made sure to acknowledge it after the game.

“The girls made history today,” coach Lewin emphasized.

As the Hornets season comes to an end, their last game against Loyola Marymount on Sat. March 23 may be canceled due to Loyola not having a full team. If the game is indeed canceled, a home game will be scheduled for Sat. March 30 against Cal State Fullerton at 10 a.m.
