The Hornets fought to kept up with the Division 2 Titans, but fell short losing 11-9 at home this Saturday afternoon.
“It was definitely a competitive game,” Fullerton head coach Pam Lewin said.
During the game, the Hornets made multiple shot attempts at the net, but were only able to get nine in successfully.
“We missed some of our free shots and if we would have made those, it might have been the difference in the game,” Lewin added.
In the first half, Cal State Fullerton was first to the goal. The Titans had taken an early 2-0 lead, but team captain Brianna Aguilar put the Hornets on the board with their first goal of the game.
“We did good as a team… leading the girls in getting a victory from what we expected,” Aguilar said.
Hornets midfielder Andrea Zuniga made the tying goal with a sharp turn at the sideline as she recovered the ball from a missed free shot by the Titans.
The Titans took a 5-2 lead after trying to get the ball past Fullerton goalie Monica Silva twice. Silva saved 12 of the 23 goal attempts made by the Titans in the game.
“I don’t feel like it’s just me who is responsible…when I saved it, it’s because the defense was there,” Silva said.
The Hornets bounced back and closed the gap to 5-4 with goals from midfielder Danielle Urtez and Aguilar. During the game both Aguilar and Urtez scored three goals apiece.
The first half ended with Fullerton charging towards the goal.
At the start of the second half, the Titas were first to the ball and kept it close to the net and continued to score.
The Hornets brought the ball in front of the net, but missed their shot at a goal. The Titans quickly recovered the ball and brought it down the field for a high shot that went over Silva’s head, bringing the score to 7-4.
Cal State’s following attempt at the net was stopped with a catch by Silva. The Hornet goalie threw the ball to her teammates who successfully passed it downfield to attacker Regina Sanchez-Molina. Molina was able to make a shot into the net and bringing the score to 7-5.
The Titans scored four more against Fullerton before they were able to take back control of the ball with an 11-7 goal. The final two goals of the game came from Urtez. She had just missed another goal, but the final whistle was blown right before and it did not count, keeping the score 11-9.
This brings the Hornet’s debut season record to 2-3. The team is currently in the provisional division and both wins have been against teams within that division.
“Every game we learn and every game are just getting better and better,” Silva said.
