Check out how your fellow hornets performed this past weekend as they head into the playoffs and conclude the regular season. Here are the weekend updates for Fullerton College sports from April 26-April 28.

Baseball

In the Hornets third straight meeting against the Rustlers, Fullerton falls on the road to Golden West 11-3 in Hornet head coach Nick Fuscardo’s last game. Entering the game with a 5 game losing streak, Fullerton’s first three batters were retired to start off the game. However, the Hornets strung up a total of 10 hits and scored in the fourth and ninth innings. Fullerton used a total of 3 pitchers who gave up 11 earned runs. As a result, the Hornets end their 2019 season at (10-27, 5-16) for Fuscardo’s final game.

Women’s Track & Field

Fullerton women’s track & field took 3rd place in the Orange Empire Conference Championships with a combined score of 106 team points. Myrna Gillas took home the OEC high jump champion with a 1.67 meter jump. Gillas followed up on her championship performance by running her best 200m with a time of 25:21 to take second place. In addition, Gillas also placed second in the long jump for an eventful day. Following Gillas in the high jump event was fellow Hornet Roxanne Cuevas, who achieved a second place finishing with a three-inch personal record of 1.47 meters.

Kim Matia took third place and Alexis Daisy Kotey took 4th place in the hammer throw. Matia tossed the shot put at 11.44m and Kotey tossed 10.90m as both claimed third place and fourth place finishes. In the hammer event, Matia and Kotey also took second and third place finishes as well.

For track, Raquel Aldama got fifth place in the 3KSC with 12:36:62. Alicia Victoria got a 4th place finish in the 100m hurdles with 16.87 and a second place finish for the 400m hurdles with 1:05.77. These hurdles runs were her best over the ten hurdles in both races. For the 4 x 400m relay, the Hornets finished third by having a six second PR from Victoria, Gillas, Cuevas, and Perez. Upcoming for the Fullerton Hornets who qualified, will be the SoCal Regional Prelim at Riverside College scheduled for 9:00 am on Saturday, May 4th.

Men’s Track & Field

With the combined score of 66 team points, Fullerton men’s track & field took 3rd in the Orange Empire Conference Championships. Ian Rusk took 2nd place in the 5,000m with a time of 15:42. Nathan Wong had his personal best in the triple jump, and took 3rd place by jumping 44’3 1.4.” Xavion Steele who runs on the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, had two 4th place finishes in the 100m and 200m races, running 10.77 and 21.62 seconds for Fullerton.

Andrew Fernando took sixth place in the 1500m, which resulted in the last automatic qualifier for the SoCal Regional. Ryan Sheatz ran 2:00.27 in the 800m, and will move on to the Regional as an at-large athlete. Upcoming for Fullerton is the SoCal Regional Prelim at Riverside College where 12 Hornets will compete on Saturday, May 4th.

Women’s Tennis

ITA/CCCAA Rookie of the Year winner, Yu Seung Suh, was the number one overall seeded player in the singles tournament for the CCCAA Championship. Competing for the Hornets, Suh made it to the semifinals losing to Shayee Sherif of Orange Coast College 6-3, 6-0. Suh also competed in the doubles tournament with her partner Alexus Lombera and they made it to the round of 16.

However, they lost to the eventual champions Inoue/Knickerbocker of Orange Coast College. Also competing in the doubles tournament for Fullerton were Savanna Schreiner-Vanhoutte, Ashley Castro, Kim La, and Janet Shiau. The team of Schreiner-Vanhoutte/Castro made it the second round before losing to No 2. Giese/Ito 6-0, 6-0. La/Shiau lost in the first round to Glendale College’s Chacon/Ghazaryan 6-2, 6-2.

Men’s Tennis

Fullerton’s doubles team of Jindrich Kosatik and Sergio Lee-Gutierrez who was the eleventh seed upset No. 3 Kodiji/Luu of American River College 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. Kosatik/Lee-Gutierrez would make it to the semifinals of the CCCAA Championship but would lose to No.1 seed team of Khamphilath/Kojima from Foothill College 6-3, 6-0. Also competing for the Hornets in the doubles competition were Thiago Manzano and Rodrigo Onate. The duo would lose to the No. 4 seed of Duarte/Toledo from Cerritos College 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 32.
