‘The Scarlet Letter’ is coming to Fullerton College

Fullerton College’s Theatre Arts Department welcomes all to experience “The Scarlet Letter,” directed by FC Professor, Michael Mueller.

Adapted from Nathanial Hawthorne’s mid-19th Century masterpiece, the play will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the campus theater.

Set amidst a village in Puritan New England (Boston), a young, lone female colonist, by the name of Hester Prynne, arrives to set up house while awaiting the arrival of her much older husband. As time passes without him, she eventually bears a child out of wedlock and is scorned by the ultra-conservative community.

“I don’t think Hester deserved the condemnation she received, the townspeople are all guilty of something but some sins are more acceptable,” said Jane Greene, who plays Hester Prynne.

The story is told by Pearl, played by both Natalie Carter (adult) and Lily Lucas (child), who returns to the New England village where she grew up to make sense of the evolution of her parents relationship. Her hope is to find resolve as she navigates her way, as a child born from sin, to function in a Puritanical world.

“I love connecting with the character I play and getting to understand the time period. This is a cast who works so hard. We all look forward to the rehearsal,” Carter said.

Performances will run from Thursday, Oct. 10 – 12, with showtimes at 7:30 each evening. There will also be an additional 2 p.m. performance on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Running time is two hours, with a 15-minute intermission.

Admission is $12.50 presale and $15 at the door.

A $45 season (annual) pass is also available for purchase, which gets you admission to all four performances during the Fall of 2019 and Spring of 2020 seasons.
