Led by high scoring performances from seniors Austin Carter and Sean Murphy Sonora rebounded from a loss against La Habra with a 72-56 win over Sunny Hills.
Murphy gave Sonora (18-3, 2-1) a quick lead in the first quarter with his his first of seven 3-pointers on the night.
Shortly after Murphy’s make from beyond the arc, senior Bruce Rutledge drained a 3-pointer of his own for the Raiders to boost them to an early 6-0 lead.
Though the Raiders were off to a hot start, the Lancers (12-9, 1-2) didn’t stay scoreless much longer.
A basket by senior Luke Ross got the Lancers on the board before the Raiders could increase their lead into double digits.
As the first quarter transpired the Lancers got over their slow start and cut Sonora’s lead to 3.
Just as it seemed like the lancers might tie the game up back to back 3-pointers by the Raiders made sure the quarter ended with Sonora in the Lead.
The second quarter began with big plays from both Freeway League teams.
Murphy hit his second 3-pointer of the night and moments later his third to put the Raiders up by 13.
The Lancers responded through a slam dunk by Ross to try to cut Sonora’s lead back down to single digits.
Whatever momentum the dunk had given the Lancers was erased moments later when Murphy hit yet another 3-pointer.
The seniors second quarter hot streak didn’t last as long as it could have.
Due to foul trouble Murphy had to miss more than half of the second quarter, and the Lancers cut the Raiders lead down to single digits while he sat.
The Raiders, with Murphy on the bench, didn’t let the Lancers get too close.
Successive steals by Sonora led to Rutledge scoring back to back two pointers to extend the lead back to double digits.
Although Sonora had a double digit lead throughout most of the second quarter, a 5-0 run by Sunny Hills cut their lead back down.
A late second quarter basket from Ross made the game 38-30 going into halftime.
Carter came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders for the Raiders and scored the first 5 points of the quarter including a 3-point play.
As Carter heated up the Lancers shooting from the field cooled down.
Lancers leading scorer for the game Luke Ross failed to convert a basket in the third quarter including a failed dunk while second leading scorer Sam Barrera also went scoreless in the third.
An open three by Murphy and four more points from Carter in the third quarter helped the raiders outscored the Lancers 17-8 in the quarter.
Ross and Barrera got back on the score sheet in the fourth quarter, but the Lancers were not able to get the stops they needed to mount a comeback.
Carter picked up right where he left off in the third quarter and began the fourth with a 2- pointer in the paint.
Murphy made sure the game was secured by hitting his seventh and final 3-pointer of the night in the final minutes of the game.
“This was a good win after the lost we had against La Habra, I feel like we’re getting motivated a little more pumped towards our next game against Troy,” said Carter.
“We had a rough game on Friday. Did Not make a whole lot of shots, so I got in the gym practiced. I figured how to make them tonight,” said Murphy.
Carter and Murphy each scored 21 points and led the Raiders in scoring.
Sonora will visit Troy on Friday to face the Warriors in league play. Sunny Hills will host Buena Park Friday in league play.
