Fullerton women’s soccer opened their season in poor fashion at home with an 8-0 loss against Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday afternoon.
Hornet freshman forward Danielle Narmi was the lone bright spot for the Hornets having a few shots on goal, while also playing stellar defense.
“I try to just focus on the game and play hard no matter the battle each player goes through,” said Narmi. “It doesn’t matter the team; it just matters how you play.”
Sophomore midfielder Natalia Reyes opened up the scoring in the 21st minute of the first half giving the Mounties an early lead. She later scored a second goal in the 65th minute to extend Mt. San Antonio’s lead in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder Veronica Aquino nailed a shot right past the Hornets freshman goalie Nyla Contreras to score the Mounties second goal in just ten minutes to make it 2-0 heading into the half.
Freshman midfielder Jasmine Delgado scored an unassisted goal right out the gate to start the second half. This started a Mounties surge right after it had appeared their scoring was going to slow down.
Mt. San Antonio freshman midfielder Brianna Bernal scored two goals of her own in the 69th minute and the 88th minute, with the assists coming from freshman midfielders Kathryn Davis and Savannah Parker.
Parker even had a goal in between the two Bernal goals, scoring herself in the 84th minute.
To cap off the devastating loss to the Mounties, freshman midfielder Yaritza Chavez put the final nail in the coffin scoring the eighth and final goal in the 90th minute.
Throughout the entire game, Contreras went through the highs and lows of being a goalie against Mt. San Antonio, but a foot injury in the 70th minute caused her to be replaced by freshman defender Jocelyn Ruiz, who surrendered three goals of her own.
Hornets sophomore midfielder Sheccid Carillo received a yellow card during the 68th minute of the second half following a confrontation with sophomore midfielder Alina Valdez of Mt. San Antonio.
The Hornets had several chances to gain possession from the Mounties, but plenty of fouls and a weak defensive effort gave the Mounties a plethora of opportunities to score and they capitalized.
Head coach for women’s soccer Pam Lewin has been calling on the team to show more energy and strength on the field during training and soccer matchups.
“We had two scrimmages where we played well with teams that didn’t have a lot of pressure. We just got to play faster with the ball,” said Lewin.
The Hornets look to bounce back in a major way with their next home matchup coming up against Rio Hondo College at 3 p.m. on Friday Sept. 8.
