Lady Lancers roll past Coyotes

A 30 point performance by sophomore guard Jessica Barrow propelled the Sunny Hills Lady Lancers to a 70-44 win over the Buena Park Coyotes.

The Lancers, who now have an even record in Freeway League play, set the tone for the game with a 9-0 run in the opening quarter of the game.

Buena Park ended the Lancers run with five unanswered points of their own, but Sunny Hills responded by heating up from the field.

The Lancers extended their early four point lead into a 13 point lead by the end of the quarter by knocking down several shots including three 3-pointers.

The Coyotes were unable to make any 3-pointers in the quarter and only managed 11 points to the Lancers 24.

Sunny Hills continued to widen the scoring gap between the two teams in the second quarter.

The Lancers (13-7, 2-2) scored 18 straight unanswered points in the second quarter including two 3-pointers by Barrow, who had 23 points by halftime.

Other than a 2-point basket to start the quarter, Buena Park (10-7, 1-3) could not catch a break and missed shots from not only beyond the arc but also from inside the paint.

The Lancer defense also played a role in the Coyotes prolonged scoreless streak.

Turnovers forced by defensive pressure were all too frequent for Buena park and Sunny Hills consistent defensive rebounding led to few second chance opportunities for the Coyotes.

in the last minute of the quarter the Coyotes were finally able to end their scoreless drought, but the damage had been done.

The Lancers dominant offensive and defensive performance in the second quarter gave them a 30 point lead at the half.

In the second half the Coyotes were able to get past some of their offensive struggles and matched the Lancers point for point in the third quarter.

Senior guard Molly Grumbo, the Lancers second leading scorer on the night, led the way for the Sunny Hills in the third quarter with eight points, including two 3-pointers, while Senior Paola Ramos put six points on the scoreboard for the Coyotes in the quarter.

Though the result of game was settled before the fourth quarter, Buena Park outscored the Lancers in the final quarter and was able to slightly lessen their lead.

Barrow topped off her big night for Sunny Hills by scoring six of the Lancers last eight points.

Buena Park will next be in action when they host Troy High School on Wednesday. Sunny Hills will visit La Habra High School Wednesday to face the Highlanders.
