All-around effort leads Lady Lancers over Fullerton

With the clock at zero, Kaila Frye stepped up to the free-throw line for one shot. Both teams watched from their benches, knowing this shot did not have any significant value. The shot was nothing but net, and it was the perfect ending for Sunny Hills (14-8, 3-3), as they rolled past Fullerton (1-19, 0-6) 66-22.
The Lady Lancers were able to force 20 turnovers in their first meeting this year, and it was more of the same this time around, as Fullerton committed 15 turnovers Friday night.
Sunny Hills’ senior sharpshooter Molly Grumbo had a season-high 18 points, with 15 of those points coming in the first half. Kaila Frye also added to the scoring effort with 16 of her own points.
The Indians, who have dropped 19 straight games, had a tough time getting the ball into the basket, as they did not score more than 8 points in each quarter.
Sunny Hills was hot from the opening tip, as they started the game on a 14-0 run. Fullerton’s senior guard Susan Valdez scored the team’s four first quarter points, and they trailed 19-4 after 8 minutes.
Grumbo and the rest of her teammates carried the hot shooting into the second quarter, as they took a 39-12 lead into halftime.
After having a successful full-court press in the first half, the Lady Lancers took some pressure off the Indian offense, but the defense continued to dominate, limiting Fullerton to just 5 points in the quarter. Vanessa Martinez, who did not arrive at the game until the middle of the second quarter, scored all of the 5 points for Fullerton in the quarter. Martinez led the Indians in scoring with 10 points.
With a 48-17 lead going into the final quarter, the scoring was still not over for the Lady Lancers. A late surge in scoring from Sunny Hills’ Kaila Frye and Maya Rayyan put the cherry on top for the Lady Lancers, as they had the 44-point win when it was all over.
Sunny Hills will be trying to give the league leading Troy Warriors their first league loss when they host them on Wednesday night, while Fullerton ends their three-game home stand against Buena Park.
