A 19-point performance by Senior guard Sam Barrera helped Sunny Hills defeat rivals Troy 60-50 and extend their Freeway League winning streak to four.

The Lancers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter, but the Warriors responded with seven straight unanswered points including five from junior point guard Jared Reyes.

Sunny Hills went on a run of their own to retake the lead.

Through frequently converting from the paint and free throw line the Lancers outscored the Warriors 13-4 in the final five minutes of the first quarter and went into the second quarter up 17-11.

The the second quarter saw the Lancers continue their offensive form.

Barrera scored six points in the quarter, including four free throws, to help sustain their advantage while Senior forward Luke Ross put 7 points on the board for the Lancers in the quarter.

Partly through offensive play by the two seniors the Lancers began to widen the gap between the Fullerton schools and were up by 10 at one point in the quarter.

As Sunny Hills (16-9, 5-2) looked to be pulling away from their rivals a big second quarter by Reyes kept the Warriors (10-13, 3-4) close.

The Junior scored 10 points in the second quarter, including the Warriors last six points in the half.

Largely due to Reyes offensive impact the Lancers lead was cut to four by halftime.

In the opening minutes of the second half Reyes continued right where he left off by scoring six of the Warriors first eight points.

The Juniors hot start to the third quarter put the Warriors in the lead for a few moments.

Finding themselves down by two early in the third quarter the Lancers went to their seniors.

A 3-pointer from Barrera put Sunny Hills back in the lead and Seniors Jacob Dibble and John Paek each scored two points to help the Lancers go up 40-35 with just under four minutes left in the quarter.

Reyes responded for Troy with a 3-pointer, but with little offensive support from his teammates the Lancers outscored the Warriors 10-3 for the rest of the half.

Reyes was hot from the field in the third quarter, but everyone else was cold.

The fourth quarter saw Reyes, who sat out the final minutes of the game due to cramping, go scoreless and with no one else compensating for his absence for Troy the Lancers grew their lead.

Ross,who had 15 points on the night, led the way for the Lancers in the fourth with six points, including an slam dunk to put Sunny Hills up by 15.

With the game winding down Troy attempted to force turnovers by implementing a full court press which bore some results but not enough to make the game close again.

Troy went on a 5-0 run in the final minute but it was far too late to mount a comeback with the gap between the two so wide.

“We just got to play tougher, got to box out” said Reyes, who added that the team really has to work on defense going into their next game.

“Guys made the adjustments that we talked about, executed when we needed to and in the end we were able to pull it out, so we’re very fortunate tonight,” said Lancers Head Coach Joe Ok, and later added that the seniors will remember the win “for a long time once they graduate.”

The second place Lancers will host first place Sonora on Friday while Troy will look to break a four game losing streak on Friday when they host Fullerton.
