Associate professor of art Todd Smith rolls ink onto the carved piece of art at the printmaking workshop taught by Pavel Acevedo on Saturday, March 2.
Dozens of art enthusiasts swept into the staff parking lot on Saturday, March 2 to experience the one-of-a-kind demonstration put on by the art department. Artists such as the 2024 artist in residence Pavel Acevedo, whose work is on exhibit from Feb. 15 – March 20, and Daniel Gonzalez, guest printmaker who worked closely with Acevedo on his projects and carved remarkable large pieces of artwork onto wood blocks. The oversized carvings were then covered in ink and sandwiched between sheets of plywood. Printmaking professor Todd Smith piolted a 10-foot industrial drum roller over the stack. The result was banners of intricate handmade art.
Those who couldn’t attend the demonstration need not worry since, according to Smith, this won’t be a one-time event. “Pavel and I would like to make this an annual event and invite artists from around the region, and just people who love printmaking and making large wood blocks to come and print their work.”
