The Fullerton College sand volleyball team opened their season by splitting a doubleheader against Orange Coast College and Long Beach City College.
The Hornets beat LBCC 4-1 before falling to OCC, 3-2.
The Hornets were led by the stellar play of their first and fourth seeded teams, who won both of their matches.The first seeded pair of Shawnna Chung and Lisa Grismer beat LBCC’s top seeded team in two sets (21-4, 21-2). They followed that by taking care of OCC’s top pairing in three sets (21-17, 13-21, 15-10).
The fourth seeded pairing of Celeste Snider and Laura Hatrzheim were not quite as dominant, but still won both matches. Snider and Hartzheim finished LBCC’s four seed in two sets (21-14, 21-14), before battling out a close one with OCC’s fours (13-21, 21-14, 15-10.)
The only FC team that did not pull out a victory was the third pairing of Jordan Hecker, and Emilee Sorbom. Hecker and Sorbom fell to LBCC (21-16, 14-21, 16-14), and then to OCC (21-13, 17-21, 15-12).
The second and fifth seeds both split their two matches. Second seeded Samantha Palmer and Crystal Chavez took down LBCC’s two seed (21-7, 21-12). They then fell to OCC’s second ranked pairing (21-18, 24-22.)
The fifth seeded Kelsey Smith and Elena Mendrin demolished LBCC’s five seed (21-4, 21-8), before falling to OCC’s five seed (21-17, 21-12).
The sand volleyball squad will have two more games on Friday versus Golden West College and Orange Coast Vollege. These will be crucial games as the teams will be battling for a spot in the playoffs.
