The Hornets won a satisfying home game last Thursday against the Saddleback Wildcats. Great energy and technique was seen from beginning to end from both teams but Fullerton ended on top after nine clean games.

Before the game started, Head Coach Yolanda Duron mentioned that they felt good about going up against Saddle back as they had beaten them recently in the pre-season but was aware that there would still be some challenge and since then they have added different players to the team.

It would have seemed that they did not have to worry about that as right off the start they won all three of the doubles in which each team of the Hornets held the lead and ran with it. This includes a clean win from Sebastian Koster and Felix Jayamaha who ended their match with a score of 8-0.

David Gutierrez and Michael Lumang had a match filled with a lot of straight shooting and high shots which turned into another win with a score of 8-1. After both those matches were finished Matthew Doria and Joseph Chatters were still in the middle of there match which was more of an uphill battle then the others but they still pulled through and doubled saddlebacks score in an 8-4 win.

This combination of energy and technique made its way into the singles matches as well with Sebastian Koster winning both of his sets with a perfect 6-0. David Gutierrez followed this up with winning both of his sets as well (6-2, 6-4) in part thanks to his hard serving which his opponent couldn’t keep up with for most of the time.

Michael Lumang followed up a double set win with one of his own with a hard fought 6-1, 6-0 leaving the rest of the players and attendees watching Felix Jayamahas match play out. After both players won a set each Felix closed it out with a win with a score of 6-7-6, 6-3, 6-4. Felix said that he was getting “pretty distracted” during his lost set but was able to pull through for getting him a big win.

Coach Yolanda said that he was very happy with the performance from the athletes during their performance against Saddleback college mentioning that their biggest improvement from last year was the “team’s attitude and energy.”
