In a must win game the Hornets looked to their ace Dylan Prohoroff and he delivered. Prohoroff pitched a complete game giving up five hits and striking out six improving his record on the season to 9-3.
The Hornets received help on the offensive end by second baseman Laine Huffman who had three hits, scored two runs, and added one RBI.
What looked to be a pitchers duel between Prohoroff and opposite pitcher Jaret Vermillon change when the Hornets bats heated up in the third inning.
Marco Rivera opened up the hitting with a single up the middle, then stole second base putting himself in scoring position. Huffman stepped up and hit a triple to left center to open a 1-0 lead. The next batter Justin Row hit a long drive of the top of the wall in deep left, which he turned into a double and brought Huffman home.
The Hornets added runs in the fourth and sixth innings to extend the lead.
The big story was Prohoroff’s performance only allowing one earned run in a complete game.
“He dominated them,” said head coach Nick Fuscardo,“my coach looked at me in the ninth and said he had the lefty ready and I said nope, he’s our horse and I am riding with him.”
The pitcher did not disappoint ending the game the way he started, retiring the side.
Prohorhoff did get himself into a jam in the eigth inning, giving up three hits. He credited his command of the off speed pitches to helping him late in the game.
“I tried to keep them off balance and hit my spots and got myself out,” Prohorloff said.
The Hornets improved 21-14 overall, 10-10 in conference play setting up a win and they are in game in the season finale.
