The wait is over, the Fullerton College softball team has officially been added to the 2015 CCCAA Regional Playoffs. The Lady Hornets come in as the #12 seed and will be facing #5 seed El Camino College in the first round series beginning Saturday.
On the surface, based on seeding and respective records it might look like a mismatch with Fullerton (23-16) traveling to El Camino (30-10). However, upon closer inspection, this series could be very close.
The Lady Hornets matched up well with the South Coast League Champion, Warriors this year, splitting the season series with one win a piece. Both games were extremely tightly contested one run games, with the most recent actually needing extra innings to decide it.
Fullerton will be sending their top pitcher, Brigid Ruiz to the mound for at least two, possibly even all three games. Ruiz has put up pretty solid numbers this season, ranking fourth in both wins (15) and strikeouts (117) in the OEC.
The Hornets will look for production offensively from Sophomore outfielder Sharylynn Chapman, who led the team with three home runs, 14 extra base hits and a .321 batting average.
Offensively, the Warriors will be relying on one of the top players in the state this year, Freshman Victoria Garcia, who finished the regular season with a .514 batting average, three home runs, six triples and nine doubles.
El Camino does not have a dominant starter like Fullerton. Instead, they will be looking for solid performances out of their duo of Reina Trejo (8-9) and Danielle Bonsky (6-6).
The Lady Hornets off their most dominant victory of the season, in which they defeated Golden West 14-0 last week. They will look to carry that momentum and confidence into the playoffs.
Fullerton will travel to El Camino for a best-of-three series beginning this Saturday, game times are 2 p.m. on Saturday, 12 p.m. on Sunday and 2 p.m. on Sunday (if necessary). The winner of the series will advance to the Super Regionals.
