With all the activity of Quadchella, one group may have been over looked. Queer People of Color (QPOC) was at Quadchella in search of people to help start their club, and received overwhelming support.
QPOC is a new organization here to make a safe community for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders (LGBT) of every race at Fullerton College.
Some people might think the fight for LGBT rights ended with the legalization of same-sex marriage. Co-founders of QPOC Jack Lam and Allan Ramirez say that the fight doesn’t end there.
QPOC is aimed at creating more visibility for homosexuals at Fullerton College. The club wants people from all walks of life to contribute ideas and goals for the community.
The Lambda Society at Fullerton College is the existing club for LGBT support, but it is not the same as QPOC. The Lambda Society wants to create a safe support system for newly realized LGBT individuals making their transition.
QPOC aims to create a safe place for LGBT that already made their transition. “We want to help the existing queer community,” said Lam.
The club is still in its organizational stages, however. Lam and Ramirez are choosing not to become an official club yet despite the fact they have over 60 signatures to become a club, more than four times as many as the required 15.
“We are trying to get to a point where we can reach tangible goals,” said Lam. QPOC is still looking for all people to come together and share ideas about how the club can help its community.
With such a positive and helpful out look, its safe to say that the QPOC will be a force for good at Fullerton College.
