Wings Cafe had their first grand opening on Thursday evening, September 24, to welcome back regulars and potential new customers to the newly renovated aviation-themed diner.
There was a large turnout as crowds of people were seen both at the entrance of the restaurant and inside. The grand opening started at 5:30 p.m. and all the seats and tables were occupied during the first hour; Many were standing in the middle of the restaurant. Sounds of laughter filled the air as everyone had a great time.
Although food from their menu was not served that evening, there were hors d’oeuvres and a variety of alcoholic beverages to choose from.
Activities Socal, a premier event planner, contributed to the planning of the grand opening. A large tent, additional seating, live music and an open wine bar were set up outside at the back of the restaurant. The crowd was a mixture of older regulars as well as a few younger working adults.
Aside from the locals, pilots that worked at the airport were very excited since the place had been empty for so long. Vikki Mena, a pilot at the Fullerton Municipal Airport, expressed how happy she was about the opening of the cafe.
“There was nothing here for a while and it’ll be a great spot for pilots that fly in and out of the airport to grab a bite to eat,” says Mena.
Owners Brian and Sherri White are a couple with a passion for food and traditional American dining. They also run a very successful and highly rated diner in Newport Beach called the Galley Cafe.
Sherri White says they wanted to look for a special place to open a new diner, and what’s more exciting and different than at the Fullerton Municipal Airport where planes are parked right out back.
White not only cares about the restaurant but also the people that come through; She was seen greeting everyone with open arms and a smile. Much like the staff, White was very attentive and walked around all areas of the restaurant making sure everyone and everything was doing alright. It’s safe to say customers that will dine here in the future will experience no short of excellent customer service.
When someone mentions an airport cafe, what comes to mind may be an uninspiring and overly priced sandwich shop; however, Wings Cafe is definitely neither those things. What makes this place so unique is the light up runway on the ground that runs through the middle of the restaurant. The doors, ceilings and table tops were decked out in metal. It all screamed aviation to fit into its location.
Their menu consists of traditional American diner food such as malts, shakes, sandwiches and hearty breakfast dishes. The prices range from $3-$10, an affordable option for Fullerton College Students to grab a bite to eat.
Overall, Wings Cafe had a very successful grand opening and will be a diner sought out by many that frequent the area.
Wings Cafe is located at 4011 West Commonwealth Avenue in the Fullerton Municipal Airport.
