Midway through the first half, Fullerton midfielder Celene Medina controlled a pass on the outside wing to beat the defender and found a streaking Channing Cordova who put a shot on goal. After the shot was saved, midfielder Crystal Foutris tapped in the loose ball for the lone goal of the game.
The Hornets went on to hold the lead for their third victory in five games.
Both teams played in extreme weather conditions with temperature in the triple digits throughout the game. The heat didn’t seem to phase the Hornets who kept constant pressure on the visiting Dons. The majority of the game was played on the Don end of the field.
“I was happy how our girls played. We had a lot of injuries and some girls had to play in some places they weren’t used to but stepped up and did a good job for us,” head coach Pam Lewin said. “We need to work at finishing our chances a little more, but we’ll be ready to take on Cypress next week and the rest of our conference games.”
Fullerton controlled the pace of the game and had most of the possession throughout the game.
The chances were limited for the visiting Dons, but they did manage a flurry of shots late in the second half as a last ditch pushed for an equalizer. Hornet goalkeeper Mallory Van Voorhis had other plans preserving the shut out with two huge saves. In a close game there is room for error so when the team captain Van Voorhis name was called, she answered.
“I just stay mentally focused on the game. I try to go through every possible scenario so if it does end up with me having to make a save, I am ready,” Van Voorhis said. “I think I need to work a little more on my vocal skills. I know I talk a lot but I want to talk with more of a purpose, but my team and I will be ready for Cypress.”
Fullerton (4-6-2, 3-3-1) will try to keep the momentum when they travel to Cypress (9-2, 5-2) Oct.13 at 3 p.m. for their next conference game. Their next home game will be Oct.16 at 3 p.m. where they will host.
