No.18 ranked, Lady Hornets volleyball took a tough loss to the Golden West College Rustlers Friday night ending their five game winning streak. The match ended 3-2 leaving the Hornets 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the Orange Empire Conference.
The Lady Hornets started off strong at 25-18 in the first set. However, the Rustlers quickly answered back with back-to-back wins, 18-25 in the second set and 12-25 in the third. The Hornets rallied for a 25-23 victory in set four but were defeated in set five 11-15.
Lady Hornet’s Alex Winfield led the team with 16 kills and Azucena Duarte trailed close behind with 13 kills. As a team, they had 48 kills against the Rustlers. Mikki Sale had 12 digs and Alex Winfield had 10 digs. Overall, they as a team had 46 digs.
The Lady Hornets prepared for the match against Golden West College by staying positive and perfecting their slide, which is when the middle hitter runs behind the setter and does a hit on the right side. However, it was the Rustlers who adjusted earlier in the match.
“You know we battled,” said Hornet’s Associate Head Coach Jason Dillard. “Golden West did a great job. They did a good job of adjusting and kept their tempo up.”
The Rustlers are now on a three game winning streak with 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the Orange Empire Conference.
The Lady Hornets plan on getting back on another winning streak by making minor adjustments to their serves and minimizing errors.
Fullerton is 6-1 at home so far this season. Cypress is 15-6 overall and is leading the conference 6-1.
The Lady Hornets play again Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. at Fullerton College in the South Gym against conference rival Cypress.
