According to Starbucks’ official statement in February, the changes to the rewards program are based on the #1 customer request for more Stars per dollar spent.
The current My Starbucks Rewards allows you to earn a Star for every purchase using a registered Starbucks Card at participating stores. It also offers a “Bonus Star” that allows you to earn an extra Star for purchasing packaged coffee or tea products at their stores or website.
The new Starbucks Rewards is designed for you to earn more stars for every purchase, while still keeping the things you love about the program– like birthday drinks, free refills and access to Mobile Order & Pay.
For every $1 you spend, no matter what you spend it on, you earn two stars.
For Starbucks customers who spend an average of $68 a month, based on a 16-ounce grande brewed coffee at $2.25 per cup, you would easily earn 136 stars.
“I like it! You get more stars for your money” said Renzo Fernandez, an international business major.
There are also changes in the new Starbucks Rewards levels. Just like the current program, these levels are determined by the number of stars you earn during each consecutive 12-month period.
Starting in April, there will no longer be a Welcome Level. All new Starbucks Rewards members will automatically be enrolled in the Green Level.
When you earn at least 300 Stars within 12 months of your enrollment date, you will qualify for the Gold Level.
If you like your Frappuccino and espresso drinks, and spend an average of $5 per visit, you can easily earn that Gold Level status.
With the new rewards program, most members who frequently buy Starbucks, especially members who go on Starbucks run for colleagues and friends to buy more than one drink per transaction, will earn Stars just as fast or faster than the current program.
For Gold Level members, the new rewards program allows you to redeem a free reward for every 125 Stars.
The new terms for the free reward may seem like a lot, but it’s actually easily achieved. If you spend $63 a month, you would instantly earn 125 Stars.
The update for the Starbucks Rewards counts your change towards a partial Star that is applied to your total Star, which means every cent counts. Plus, the new program also offers Monthly Double-Star Days for Gold Level members.
The Monthly Double-Star Days occur once a month, which allows Gold Level members to earn 4 Stars for every $1 spent on a specific day. Regardless how often you come in, what time of the day and what you buy, you will earn double Stars on your Monthly Double-Star Day.
Just like the current My Starbucks Rewards, the new Starbucks Rewards is a no fee membership to participate. It’s enhanced to be bigger and better. So there’s no need to split your purchases to earn a star. You’ll get more Stars for your money.

This is ridiculous that same person that bought one grande at $2.25 used to pay $27 before you got the same free reward that now cost you $68. How is that a better loyalty program?
