In 2004, “Napoleon Dynamite,” directed by Jared Hess, brought to light the deliciousness of
tater tots. Napoleon stores extra tater tots in his pockets like a squirrel saving acorns for the winter.
Bite-sized, dippable and delicious- tater tots are amazing. These fried packed pellets of diced potato are always cooked to the perfect crisp with the delicious squish of a french fry.
My love for tater tots is so great I often compare it to my love for my girlfriend. Whenever my girlfriend asks how much I love her, I tell her, “I love you lots like tater tots.” Then she knows I truly love her.
However the majority of students don’t share this love. With over 100 students asked, 65 percent preferred french fries to tater tots. How can something so versatile and amazing be so underrated?
Tater tots retain their deliciousness longer than french fries do. Reid Boonrat, kinesiology major, thinks cold tater tots are better than cold french fries. “Older tater tots are better than older french fries”, said Boonrat. “And Cheesy tots are better than cheesy fries”
Tater tots are multi-talented. Crispy enough to use as hash browns in a breakfast combo, and are easier to eat with a fork than fries are when they are covered in cheese and bacon.
However, in recent years at Fullerton College, Sodexo has classified them as a breakfast food, only available until 10:30 a.m.
Sociology major Jessica Ochoa wanted to get tater tots when she first got to school, however, it was already past 10:30 a.m. She was too late to enjoy their golden fried goodness.
“I was going to get tater tots, but was disappointed because they were unavailable,” said Ochoa. ” I work till midnight most days, and my first class isn’t till 11:30 a.m., so it’s hard to get here early enough for tater tots.”
How can the most delicious item on Sodexo’s menu be restricted to a time when most students are not even on campus?
Ian Kolaja, physics major, is not as passionate about tater tots as I am. He prefers fries to tater tots, but still thinks they should be offered all day. “I want the illusion of a choice”, said Kolaja. “It is about the ability to have an option even if you don’t make the choice”.
Tater tots should be an option for all students at any time of the day. To paraphrase one of the most well-known advocates of freedom Nelson Mandela, Let tater tots reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.
