The Hornets dominated against Santa Ana College, beating them 56-17 at Santa Ana’s Eddie West field Saturday night.
It was the 94th Key to the County Game in the historic rivalry to open up the Hornet’s 2016 football season.
Hornet Quarterback Jordan Hoy went 27 for 38 for a total of 329 passing yards with six touchdowns. Hoy also ran in a touchdown of his own.
Hoy spread the ball around in the air, hitting receivers Asante Wilder, Jerome Gross, Markus Grossman and Justin Walker for touchdowns.
The Hornet’s defense played lights out by only allowing 53 rushing yards and 151 passing yards and keeping the Dons to only 17 points in the contest.
Despite the the score, penalties on both offense and defensive were troublesome for the Hornets. the team totaled 17 penalties for 170 yards in the game.
The Hornets (1-0) made mistakes on special teams by allowing the Dons to scoop and score on a high snapped ball on a what should have been a routine punt for them.
“I’m very disappointed in our special teams as far as our snappers and kicks go” said Fullerton Head Coach Tim Byrnes. “I think we made a lot of mistakes. I think we could’ve really done better, but that’s just how the first game goes.”
The Hornet’s captured the historic Key for the tenth consecutive year against Santa Ana.
“I never want to lose it, but one day it will happen, but hopefully not for a long time,” added Byrnes on keeping the Key at Fullerton.
The Hornets looked dominant against Santa Ana College and look to cut down on the mistakes made in the game.
They will use that to better themselves for next week’s game against No. 7 Cerritos at Cerritos College. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. next Saturday, Sept 10.
Byrnes was happy for the win, but knew The Hornets will need to step up their play against a strong Cerritos team.
“Next week isn’t going to be the same,” he said. “It’s going to be a lot better competition we play next week.”
