Fullerton College softball team extended their win streak for a third straight victory against the visiting Santa Ana College, 2-1.
The Hornets entered the game red hot against the Dons, winning 9 of their last 10 ballgames and continued their winning ways on Tuesday night.
The Dons got the scoring going in the 2nd inning. Santa Ana’s Jeana Gonzales lead off the inning with a single to left field. Gonzales advanced to third after a fielder’s choice and a sacrifice bunt. Stephanie Rojas drove in Gonzales wit a sacrifice fly to center field to take a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets’ bats were sluggish at first, going down in order the first three innings.
However, during the fourth inning, the Hornets’ bats woke up and produced their first run of the game.
FC’s sophomore shortstop Sabrina Anguiano led off the inning with a single. Once a sacrifice bunt and groundout proceeded after, cleanup hitter Lulu Vasquez doubled in Anguiano with two outs to tie the ballgame at 1-1.
Santa Ana went quiet in the top of the 5th inning and the Hornets kept their momentum going in the bottom half of the frame.
Hornets second baseman Sarah Rengifo led off the inning with a double and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt. Fullerton’s catcher, Veronica Garza came up with two outs and Rengifo still on third. Garza came through with a huge single that gave the Hornets the lead.
A lead they would not concede, as Fullerton’s Lulu Vasquez held the 2-1 lead for the final two innings of the game to pick up her ninth win of the season.
For the game, Vasquez went seven innings only allowing 3 hits and 1 run. She also struck out 4 Dons. Vasquez was in control the whole game and lowered her season era to an impressive 1.98.
