The Fullerton College Hornets baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, 6-2, on the road to Mt. San Antonio College, this past Tuesday.
The Hornets looked played well early, and started the scoring in the top of the first inning. Derrek Garcia scored all the way from first on a double by Garrett Donohoe.
Fullerton would score again in the third inning. Dakota Wix came around and scored on an error by Mt. SAC third baseman, Caleb Romo, to give the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Fullerton would not score again and the rest of the game belonged to Mt. Sac.
The Hornets missed a lot of opportunities and couldn’t get the big hit when it was needed. “We had a few good chances in there throughout the game,” said FC head coach Nick Fuscardo, “But we couldn’t get the run in.”
In the bottom of the third, Mt. SAC scored two runs to take the lead, and never looked back.Tyler Grijalva led off the inning with a walk for the Mounties, and came around to score on a triple by Dustin Frailey. Frailey would score later on in the inning on a wild pitch.
The highlight play came in the bottom of the seventh, when the Mounties scored a run on a perfectly executed double steal. Grijalva took off and stole second and on the throw, Gabe Douglas took off from third and stole home. The Mounties added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning.
Hornet pitching only gave up six hits, but were plagued with seven walks, while the Mounties only walked two and struck out eight. “Whenever you walk as man batters as we did, you are putting yourself in jeopardy to lose the game,” Fuscardo added.
With the win, the Mounties improve to 3-0 and will host Ventura College on Thursday night. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-1 and will host L.A. Mission College on Saturday at noon.
“We need to play like we did last weekend, when we won two games,” Fuscardo said. “Last weekend, we pitched well, hit well, and only made one error.”
