Streaming offering movies and television shows is the new cable. There are five streaming shows that new viewers need to check out.
“You” on Netflix first aired back in September of 2018. It sparked the interest of many fans of romance, mystery and “Gossip Girl.” It’s a plot-twisting thriller of surprise and obsession. According to TIME magazine, it was one of the top five most-streamed shows on Netflix this past year with more than 40 million members watching the show in its first four weeks.
The basic plot is about a young man, Joe, who is a bookstore manager in New York. He meets a girl named Beck, who is an aspiring writer in the city as well. It starts off as a crush until viewers realize that it quickly becomes a complete obsession and he will do anything to be with this young woman, anything.
“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” is what many people thought of as a rendition of the iconic Disney staple movie “High School Musical: The Musical,” but it is not. It is a show with its own ideas.
Streaming on Disney+, the students of East High School put on a production of “High School Musical: The Musical,” with comedically breaking the 4th wall and is nostalgic for those who were in theatre during high school. Yet, the show still manages to have killer, catchy songs and breakout dances that remind people of the original movie.
“The Good Place,” streaming on Hulu and starring Kristen Bell, is a comedy about a woman who passes away and wakes up in a place somewhere up there with all of the good-hearted people.
She quickly realizes that she’s been mistakenly put there, after living her life on earth mindlessly and has to find a way to fit in to fool the rest of the people, or truly change. She chooses the latter, but it is not an easy step for her to take with her witty attitude and snarky remarks to almost everything.
Available on Amazon Prime Video, “The Man in the High Castle” is imprecisely based on Philip K. Dick’s novel of the same name. The show is set in an alternate universe, where the Axis power (Nazis) won WWII. It first released back in 2015 and its final season was released in November of 2019.
It is one of the most popular series on the streaming service and has a lot of young adult fans. Many fans of this show also enjoyed “Brave New World” and “Bird Box.”
“Watchmen” is a new sci-fi show that was released on HBO in October of 2019. It is based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. There is a white supremacist attack on the police department in Tulsa, OK. After the attack, cops may now disguise themselves in order to protect themselves.
Sister Night is one of the cops who fight racists and carries the legacy of past watchmen. It is an exciting rendition of the comics while breaking new ground of its own. Many people were excited for the show to come out and it is refreshing to see a popular sci-fi show with black representation. Many students agree that there should be more diversity in Hollywood and are glad that this show has a focus on beating up racism.
