LA HABRA—From all the laughs, cheers, and celebrations, it seemed as if the La Habra bench was having a party Friday night, and they deserved it. The Lady Highlanders outplayed the Fullerton Indians in all phases of the game, as they won 71-16.
La Habra (13-6, 2-2) was able to capitalize on their full-court press, as they forced Fullerton to commit 25 turnovers, compared to the Lady Highlanders’ 6.
Fullerton (1-17, 0-4) spent much of the night trying to stop La Habra’s senior center Hannah McArthur, who dominated with 12 points and game highs in rebounds (13) and steals (6).
The game started off sluggish for both teams, as Fullerton held a 2-0 lead for nearly four minutes of the first quarter. However, it did not take long for La Habra’s Lani Maehara to get hot, as she erupted for a quick 9 first quarter points as the Lady Highlanders took a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
It was in the second quarter where La Habra took complete control of the game, as Fullerton’s Vanessa Martinez made the only bucket for the Indians in the quarter, while Lady Highlanders scored 22 points, giving them a 42-9 lead at halftime.
La Habra’s Emma Zener opened up the second half with a pair of 3-pointers, sending the La Habra crowd into frenzy. Zener led the game in scoring with 20 points, with 15 of those points coming from 3-pointers.
Every basket after that resulted in the La Habra bench celebrating, as they outscored the Indians 29-7 for the rest of the game, en route to their 55 point win.
Both teams will be back in action next Tuesday, as La Habra hosts Sunny Hills, while Fullerton will begin their three-game home stand, as Sonora will visit the Indians.
