After taking down No. 11 Westlake on Tuesday, Troy was ready to take on Mater Dei in a quarterfinal matchup between two powerhouse teams. However, after a battle by the Warriors, Mater Dei’s Emma Clark hit the game winner in overtime for the 2-1 win for the Lady Monarchs.
The Monarchs struck the first blow, as sophomore forward Lily Slater scored a goal from the right side that found its mark into the left corner just ten minutes into the match.
The Lady Warriors responded right back as Jillian Dias hit a header into the goal off a corner kick, tying the game at 1-1 before the half.
In the second half, Troy executed crisp ball movement and got good looks at the goal, but could not convert. Kristen Chong missed on two close kicks that careened right above the post. Brianna Diaz got in close from the left but was blocked by Monarch goalkeeper Kelly McManus.
McManus’ dive for the block left the other side of the goal wide open but no Troy forwards were in sight to clean up the miss.
After 80 minutes, the game was tied at 1-1 and sent into overtime. Both teams began playing with more desperation in the extra period as the first team to score wins in sudden death. Troy goalkeeper Sara Valencia had two consecutive saves as she leapt to block a shot and dived on the field to secure the loose ball.
Megan Balderas had a chance to win the game for Troy but missed a shot from 20 yards. Most of the Troy players were focused on offense in that play and the Monarchs saw an advantage down the field. Lily Slater, who scored the first goal, raced down the field and passed to Clark for the game winning goal.
Mater Dei beat Troy 2-1 and advances to the semifinals facing the No. 20 rnked Hart Indians on Tuesday.
