It’s a season of high hopes and redemption for Fullerton College sports. Althletics underwent some big changes, but still remain championship driven this fall season.
Football Season is upon us, and yes, the NFL is back but more importantly your Hornet Football team looks to rebound from a rough season.
In 2018, following an Investigation, Fullerton college was found guilty of violating multiple rules pertaining to ineligible players.
The results of the investigation led to two years probation and forfeiture of games from 2017 that led to the team losing their national championship. As well as games in 2018, which led to a 2-8 overall record for the Hornets.
Head coach Tim Byrnes has taken some time away from coaching since the investigation, leaving offensive coach Garrett Campbell serving as interim.
In 2019, anointed Head Coach Campbell will lead the Hornets, and after a long and successful camp the Hornets appear to be ready for a strong season.
The Hornets will have a lot to prove after forfeiting their 2017 and 2018 wins. Can the Hornets football team overcome this bad reputation and become champions again?
Soccer is back, and after 26 years the men’s soccer team brought home an OEC championship last season. They fell short in the SoCal playoffs, but look to capture a state title this fall.
Women’s soccer qualified for the SoCal regional playoffs last season but fell short in the first round.
Season play began Tuesday, Aug. 27, for both the men’s and women’s soccer team. The men opened the season with a loss and the women took home a victory. Friday, Aug. 30, is the first home game for both Hornet soccer teams.
The women’s volleyball team is also back on the court with new talent. Head coach Megan Glennie is back for her second season, after she led the team to playoffs her first season as head coach in 2018. The lady Hornets season begins Saturday Aug. 31., at the Bakersfield Quad Tournament.
The biggest change to Hornet sports was the retirement of longtime men’s baseball coach Nick Fuscardo, who racked up 665 career wins as the winningest head coach in the program’s history.
Fuscardo’s successor of the men’s Baseball team is Chad Baum, a longtime assistant coach at Cal state Fullerton. Baum spent 13 seasons with the titans as a coach (2000-2004, 2012-2019).
Baum accumulated 455 wins while on the Titan coaching staff and had six College World Series appearances. Hopefully Baum can lead the Fullerton Hornets back to their winning ways, after a disastrous 2019 campaign.
