Balos saves prevent a Hornets loss

The Hornets tied the 2018 State Champions Santiago Canyon College Hawks 2-2 on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Fullerton pressed hard in the first half driving the goal, keeping the Hawks on their heels. Quick passes and hard drives got the Hornets closer to the net.

The Hornets sophomore Regina Sanchez-Molina scored at the 3:21 mark on the clock with the assist from Morgan Dack putting them up 1-0.

The Hawks responded with fast and aggressive play, as they took several shots-on-goal. Quick work from the FC goalie Monica Balos kept the Hawks out of the net.

The first half came to an end with the Hornets leading by a slim margin of 1-0 in a tightly contested matchup.

The Hawks jumped on the Hornets to start the second half. A goal at the 51 minute mark of the game from SCC’s Tara Hanson finally beat Balos and tied the game 1-1.

The Hawks struck again in minute 68 of the game scoring a goal off a corner kick. A mashup up of SCC players contributed to the goal, giving them the 2-1 advantage over the Hornets.

The Hawks stayed aggressive and they pressed towards the goal taking several more shots, but Balos continued to impress blocking almost everything that was in her line-of-sight.

The Hornets struck back and scored off a corner kick in the 79 minute mark by Dack with an assist by Victoria Arrieta, tying the game at 2-2.

The Hornets pressed the net several times but came up empty. Time expired and the final score was in the books 2-2.

Balos played an impressive game finishing with eight saves and two goals allowed. The two goals came off mashups of players, Balos did everything in her power to shut them out.

Next up: Hornets 8-2-1 will travel to Cypress on Friday Oct. 18 to take on the Chargers at 3 p.m.
