Review: ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ the wicked fairy enchants the box office this weekend

Angelina Jolie returns to the silver screen as Maleficent along with Elle Fanning playing the role of Aurora both complimented each other’s characters very well.

The budget for the film was 50 million dollars with 28 million going to Angelina Jolie to play the role of Maleficent. The film grossed 36 million this weekend landing it in the number one spot in the box office charts.

Angelina Jolie had a strong role acting as an evil but kindhearted fairy godmother of Aurora. The cast change of Prince Phillip played by Harris Dickinson brought more excitement to the film. Dickinson’s performance fit the role as the charming prince compared to Brenton Thwaites who portrayed Phillip in the first “Maleficent.”

The cast change of Prince Philip was not the only change but also a change of directors. Robert Stromberg directed the 2014 film of Maleficent and with the new take on the mistress of evil directed by Joachim Ronning gave a both films their own unique feel.

Throughout the film there were different parts that were magical as well as emotional and engaging. There were parts throughout the movie in terms of good, evil, love and war.

The film captures that every relationship has doubts but with love it’s possible to overcome anything. Not only does this film have to do with love but it also helps signify what friendships are supposed to be. With Aurora being queen she stays loyal to the friendships that she has in her kingdom that Maleficent provided for her.

Aurora proves in this film that love and loyalty play a big role because betrayal is never the answer especially to loved ones. Love and loyalty are some of the main points in a movie showing that it is best to always do the right thing.

The run time ran under close to two hours but never felt too long with all the excitement throughout the entire film. Although the beginning did have a slow start it picked up as the movie went on having the audience at the edge of their seats.
