The Fullerton Hornets get swept by the Irvine Valley College Lasers Wednesday night, ending their eight game win streak.

The Hornets ran into the undefeated Irvine Valley college hoping to extend their streak to nine games, but Irvine had other thoughts.

Irvine came ready to play, the Hornets played hard in the first set as they held a 2-point advantage over the Lasers.

The Lasers made some outstanding saves, extending play that allowed them to put the pressure back on Fullerton.

After tying the set and eventually taking over IVC took the first set 19-25.

The second set mirrored the first set with Fullerton taking an early lead. Some miscues came off of serves from the Hornets which cost them points allowing IVC back in the game.

A couple missed serves by the Hornets doomed them as those points would later be the difference in the match.

Capitalizing on the mistakes and great game play enabled Irvine to take the set 21-25.

“There were consistent, they are very consistent, they don’t make a lot of mistakes and as a team competing against them you can’t make a lot of mistakes either,” said head coach Megan Glennie.

Starting the third set the Hornets appeared to be fatigued. Irvine put their foot on the gas and did not look back. For most of the set the Lasers maintained control.

The set came to an end after a dominant performance from Irvine Lasers guided them to a 18-25 set win.

The Lasers head coach Tom Pestolesi felt that Fullerton has a very talented team, with great coaching. He felt his key to victory in this match up was the game plan his staff had developed and the exception of his team.

The Hornets sophomore Saylor Frew led the Hornets with 11 kills, sophomore Priscilla Gutierrez led the team with 13 digs and freshman Chloe Johnson led the team with 31 assist.

Coach Glennie expressed that the team needs to continue to improve in their mental toughness, improve some of the enplane mistakes and never give up going forward. It was a hard fought game but she feels the team can improve when they are down and respond better when the momentum shifts in favor of the opposing team.

Next Up: Fullerton will look to rebound at Orange Coast college Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
