Review: 9-1-1 Lone Star

Taking a spin from Fox’s 9-1-1 series based in LA, 9-1-1 Lone Star premiered in January 2020.

The spinoff is centered on Rob Lowe who plays an NYFD Captain who moves to Austin, Texas to help rebuild a firehouse after a huge disaster.

Rob Lowe’s character faces many challenges of not only rebuilding a firehouse from the ground up but dealing with creating a team that comes from a wide spectrum of our current culture.

Lowe and his firefighter son, who is portrayed by Ronen Rubinstein, hand-select the other members of the new firehouse. Rubinstein’s character is openly gay in an occupation that is about as hyper-masculine as it comes and a recovering drug addict. Rubenstein struggles with opioid addiction and relationship issues from moment one to set the tone of the show. Some of the other characters of the show encapsulate the different cultures within modern society.

The other leading male role, played by Jim Patrick, is a good old boy from Texas with a southern draw and can be seen wearing a cowboy hat outside of the firehouse. He represents the hyper-masculine cowboy that has to find a place with this new group that seems to stretch his comfort zone with every episode. The show highlights the different areas of relationships, cultural discrimination, drug addiction, struggles with mental health issues and the general pushback these characters have to face in our modern society.

The diversity of the new firehouse members range includes transgender, diverse religious backgrounds and strong independent females. The show highlights the life of these people, including points of the strength and weakness that each brings to make a perfect ragtag group.
