Big second quarter powers Buena Park past Indians

BUENA PARK – After an even first quarter, it seemed like the crowd at Buena Park High School was in store for a competitive game. Instead, they saw a dominant effort by Buena Park as they beat Fullerton  68-40 in Freeway League action Friday night.

Elijah Jones-Church led the Coyotes in scoring with 18 points, while Fullerton’s sophomore sharpshooter Stone Sinek scored 18 as well.

The game started of well for Buena Park, as the Coyote’s guard Cameron Dashiell scored the first eight points of the game to take an 8-0 lead. Fullerton was able to start scoring and found themselves up 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Once the second quarter began, it was all Buena Park. The Coyotes (17-2, 1-1) opened the quarter on a 16-0 run that was led by Jones-Church, who scored 12 of his 18 in that quarter. It took over five minutes for Fullerton to score in the quarter, as Eddie Bair hit a jump shot to end the scoring drought.

The Indians (4-11, 0-2) were only able to score six points in the quarter, while Buena Park scored 24 points to take a 38-21 lead at halftime.

The third quarter did not get any better for Fullerton. Buena Park opened the second half on another run, this time a 15-0 run.

It was a 3-pointer from Stone Sinek six minutes into the quarter that proved to be the only points for the Indians during the quarter. Fullerton’s three points could not compare to Buena Park’s 22 third quarter points, and the Coyotes ended the third quarter with a comfortable 60-24 lead.

No Coyote starter played the fourth quarter, as Buena Parked cruised through the fourth quarter to seal the 28-point win.

The 68-40 loss makes Fullerton the only team without a win in league play, but they will get another try at their first Freeway League win with a home game Tuesday night against Troy.
