Barrow helped lead Lady Lancers over Coyotes

Season leading scorer Jessica Barrow put 22 points on the scoresheet to lead the Lady Lancers to a 48-31 road victory over the Buena Park Coyotes.

From the opening moments of the Freeway league matchup Sunny Hills (15-10, 4-5) took the lead but Buena Park (11-11, 2-7) stuck around throughout the first quarter.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first quarter and if not for Barrows free throw shooting abilities would have gone into the second quarter tied.

Barrow scored the quarters last four points from the free throw line and as both teams went scoreless in the final minutes, the Lancers went into the second up 9-5.

The Lady Lancers began to pull away from the Coyotes in the second quarter.

Barrow put up seven points for Sunny Hills in the quarter, including an early 3-pointer, and scored the last basket of a 5-0 run by the Lady Lancers to end the half.

Buena Park was consistently losing the ball in the quarter which prevented them from being able to match the Lady Lancers baskets.

Though at one point in the second quarter they were down by three, the Coyotes ended the half down by 10 and the third quarter only grew the gap between them and the Lady Lancers.

The Coyotes offensive efforts kept the Lady Lancers within 10 for a part of the third quarter, but Buena Park had no effective defensive schemes to stop Barrow.

The guard had another seven point quarter for the Lady Lancers in the third, and contributed to a 9-0 quarter ending that put Sunny Hills up 37-18.

Entering the final quarter of the game the Lady Lancers looked to have the game put away and the chances of a Coyotes comeback were dim.

The fourth quarter only confirmed what the end of the third suggested.

Barrow managed only two points towards the end of the game, but her teammates made sure the lead remained in double digits.

The Lady Lancers had five different scorers in the quarter including Lauren Scambray, who ended the game as Sunny Hills second leading scorer with nine points, and Kaila Frye who hit a 3-pointer to put them up by 20 at one point in the fourth.

Destiny Ortiz led the Coyotes efforts to cut into  the Lady Lancers lead with six points in the quarter and nine in the game.

Buena Park will play the final game of their Freeway League season on Thursday when they visit Troy to take on the Warriors. Sunny Hills will have the opportunity to tie for third in the league standings when they take on La Habra at home on Thursday.
