Fullerton softball edges Troy

After capturing their first league victory in a blowout against Buena Park last week, Fullerton turned to senior Ceci Lopez to go up against rival Troy. Lopez dominated the Warriors from the mound, as she pitched her second complete game shutout of the season, and the Indians scored early to secure a 3-0 win at home.

This was the second straight shutout by Fullerton, making it 14 straight innings without giving up a run.

Fullerton (10-9, 2-1) scored its 3 runs on 8 hits and no errors. With the win, Lopez improved her record to 5-4 on the year, and lowering her ERA to 1.02.

Troy (8-12, 0-3) was able to get 4 hits, and they committed one error. The loss on Tuesday afternoon made it 3 straight defeats for the Warriors.

The Fullerton offense got going early, as Alexia Silvas hit a lead off single in the bottom of the first. After Silvas stole second with and advanced on a groundout, senior Mayra Encinas hit single to center field to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.

On the following Indian at-bat, it was déjà vu, as Kristen Smith started the second inning with a leadoff single. After she had stole second base and advanced on a groundout, Amanda Vogelsong singled on a short fly ball to center field to extend the Indian lead by 2.

In the bottom of the third, with runners on first and second and two outs, Kristen Smith hit a single to center field to bring Mayra Encinas home, make it 3-0 in favor of the Indians.

Lopez continued her dominance throughout the first four innings, as she only gave up 1 hit during that span.

The Warriors failed to capitalize with runners in scoring position, as they were 0-4 when they had a chance to put a run up on the scoreboard. What was key for the Indians was that all of their runs came with 2 outs, as the Indians did not go down easy in the first 3 innings.

Lopez ended the game by making a quick stop on a groundball, and throwing it to first to seal the victory.

Both squads will be back in action on Thursday afternoon, as Troy will play host to Sonora in search of their first league victory, while Fullerton will travel to La Habra in hope jump into second place in the Freeway League standings.
