The Fullerton College Cosmetology department will now be open on campus for students, staff, faculty, veterans, and first responders to receive services from level four and five students within the program. The salon opened its doors on Friday Sept. 6th for the Fall 2024 semester and will be offering haircuts, hairstyling, manicures, pedicures, makeup, and tweezing. In spring 2025, more services such as facials and other chemical services will be offered as the salon opens for more of a full-service launch.
This will be the first opening in over four years since the campus closure in 2020 due to the pandemic. When the campus reopened in 2022, the cosmetology department remained remote until 2023 with the new level one cohort of students starting on campus.
Before the opening of the salon, several things had to be adjusted within the program in preparation for the opening. New rules and policies were implemented as well as inventory had to be checked and replaced for the classrooms to be ready.
“We gave ourselves the time and the space to relearn–everything– to bring back clients this fall semester, let’s ease into it,” said Yvonne Salazar, the Department Coordinator and Instructor of Cosmetology.
The pricing for the services include free haircuts for veterans and first responders on Thursdays and a 50% discount on Fridays.
Haircuts for students start at $15 without styling and increase with additional styling or treatments. Students will get 10% off with a valid student ID and faculty and staff receive 25% with their ID. Senior citizens will also receive $2 off when serviced by level four and five students.
Camila Reynoso, a senior level five student in the cosmetology program, will be one of the students working the salon for the opening. “ It makes me feel proud and good about myself that I am able to change someone’s look and get the opportunity to experience and help us improve–getting the chance makes me happy that I can change them to make them feel pretty and beautiful.”
Not only are cosmetology students excited about the re-opening, former clients have looked forward to this day. Ellen Gould, a senior client who came in for a round bob haircut expressed how unfortunate it was for her to hear that services were closed down during the pandemic. She has been an incoming client for more than 10 years.
“Now that it has reopened, I will be coming several times a year,” said Gould.
The salon will be open on Thursdays and Fridays. The hours for Thursdays will be 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. and in the evening from 5:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Fridays the salon will only be open from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m.
To make an appointment, clients can call to schedule through the reception desk at 714-992-7123 or walk-ins are available as well. The reception office is room 712-A on the first floor of the 700 building.
“It’s been a long time coming, we’re happy to welcome them–to give them a space where we can be a part of their personal care–not just to make them look good but more importantly to help them feel good,” said Salazar.
The location of the salon services was misidentified in an earlier version of this article. The services are held in the 700 building.
