In 1999 Nickelodeon premiered the very first episode of Spongebob Squarepants. 16 years later, the franchise is still running strong and its popularity has proven to be Nickelodeon’s highest rated series ever.
10 years after its last film “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie”, which performed great in the box office, Nickelodeon finally decided to release a second film “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water.”
Opening on Feb. 6, the film opened with huge success grossing 55 million against its budget of 74 million, according to IMBD.
The secret recipe to the Krabby Patty Burger, that is a favorite to all residents of Bikini Bottom, has gone missing, causing all of Bikini Bottom to go through an apocalypse. It’s up to SpongeBob and his loyal friends to save the world.
This is a Spongebob movie that clearly appeals to the Spongebob fans. The good thing about this film is that it does not try to be anything else or try to adjust their format to appeal to non-Spongebob viewers.
This film has everything. It’s an action film which is how the movie opens up. It’s a superhero, time-travel, post-apocalyptic all mashed into one.
The target audience for the film was clearly kids. But adults will enjoy this film just not for the plot of the story. The plot does nothing to keep adults engaged. Instead, its the mindless humor that keeps you laughing and maybe, at times, question your intelligence. You won’t care about what happens to the story, instead, you are waiting to see what other stupid and ridiculous gags they come up with that will have you laughing.
The trailers for the films were sort of false-advertisement. The trailers showed the characters on land and they were CGI. That part of the film was only on the final act of the film. The rest of the movie was classic cartoon animated SpongeBob that we all know and love, which was a relief to all grown-up fans of the series. Oddly enough, it was when the characters left the ocean and went onto land that the films humor and appeal started to dry up.
All in all the film was fun and energetic. It does what it sets out to do, which is give SpongeBob fans a new adventure. Kids, teenagers, and adults who are not looking for intelligent or clever humor will enjoy it.
