Softball

The women’s softball team has won four of six in March, including victories in both games of last Saturday’s double-header. The Lady Hornets defeated LA Valley 7-0, and El Camino 4-3. Starting pitcher Gina Ruiz lead the way for the Lady Hornets, picking up three straight victories in that span and boosting her record to (7-3).

The softball team will have back to back home games this week, facing Cypress on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and Santiago Canyon on Friday at 2 p.m.

Sand Volleyball

Sand volleyball officially became a collegiate sport this semester. The Lady Hornets sand volleyball team kicked off its inaugural season last Friday at Golden West College, splitting a double-header. The girls defeated Rio Hondo, 5-0, but fell to Palomar 1-4. The team is led by Sophomore Brianna Cervantes, who also plays on the indoor team.

The girls will be back at Golden West this Friday for another double-header, against Mira Costa and Santa Barbara. The first match serves at 10 a.m.

Tennis

The men’s tennis squad has hit a bit of a rough patch lately. However, the team snapped a three game losing streak, defeating Cypress 8-1 on Thursday. Brazilian Daniel Garcia, is the team captain and only Sophomore on the squad. Come see the team in action at home Thursday at 2 p.m. Garcia will lead the Hornets as they take on Saddleback.

The women’s tennis team has a four match losing streak coming into the week. The Lady Hornets will look to turn things around with back to back matches against Saddleback College this week. Tuesday the girls are at home against the Gauchos, then the girls will hit the road to take on Saddleback again Thursday.

Track & Field

Track and field season is rounding into form. Thus far, all of the meets serve as preparation for bigger events that begin in late April. The OEC Championships begin April 24 at Orange Coast College. The CA State Championships wrap up the season on May 16 in San Mateo.

This week, the men’s and women’s track and field squads will be busy. Come check out the OEC Hep/Dec at Orange Coast on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Then on Friday the distance runners will be tested at the Occidental Distance Carnival races begin at 6 p.m.
