Hornets offensive drought continues, drop third straight

RCC struck first in the top of the second on a single to left field by second baseman Austin Roberts. The Hornets quickly ended the inning with an excellent display of fielding, turning a double play on the next batter.

FC had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Oscar Heredia got on base with a bunt and was then advanced to third on a single by DH Shane Carrier. However, they failed to take advantage of the runners in scoring positon as CF David Miranda hit a pop fly with two outs that was caught by the opposition.

The Tigers scored two more in the sixth on single to left field by Catcher Mason Fishback, before Fullerton finally answered with a rally of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Heredia and Carrier got it started with back-to-back hits up the middle that set up shortstop Justin Rowe for a single to right that put the Hornets on the scoreboard.

With the game still close at 3-2 going into the eighth, FC blew another scoring opportunity on a couple of fielding errors by the Tigers. The heavy-hitting Carrier went down swinging with two runners left on base.

Riverside then poured on two more runs at the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach as the Hornets were unable to get another rally going with their last at-bats.

In a game that featured blown scoring opportunities, it was also a great display of pitching on both sides. Riverside pitcher Tyler Rowe recorded his fourth win of the season, throwing a complete game with two strikeouts. Fullerton pitcher Kyle Lazcano suffered his fifth loss of the year in a trying effort tossing six strikeouts through five innings.

The Hornets look to finish off the regular season strong as they square off against Cypress College at home on Tuesday, April 21. Game starts at 2 p.m.
