Fullerton cheerleaders cheer and compete year-round, making cheer the only year round sport at Fullerton College. They cheer for football and basketball games and compete against other local and national college cheer squads.

When they aren’t cheering or competing, FC cheerleaders can be found fundraising at local events.

Their season starts in the summer. Cheer camps last about 6-8 hours per day for a week. When team learns new cheers, stunts, and dances. They also begin to know one another and work as a group and not as individuals.

“It’s important for us to get close and create a bond and stay away from starting small groups or alienating other teammates,”said, sophomore, Mariah Flores. “We should all be in this together and keep the energy alive, positive and happy,”

The team is made up of 35 members who are dedicated to this new year. They plan on working hard to make the team better and stronger than in the past previous years.

“In general, trying to improve knowledge of the cheers and game performance is what it will take to make this years team the best”, said cheer captain Camille Pechon.

The FC cheerleaders have practices on Mondays and Wednesday nights and the practices consist of a mile run , stretches, review of cheers, dances and stunts. They also attend all home and away football and basketball games.

Alix Plum Widner is the cheer coach for the FC cheer squad. She has been coaching the FC cheer squad for a decade now. She is never satisfied, and is always trying to come up with new ways to improve.

“The girls need to be kept in check to properly represent the team,” second cheer captain, Leah Jana Burney said. “Three strikes and they will be removed from the squad.”

The FC cheerleaders can next be seen as the undefeated FC football team takes on Golden West, Saturday, at 12:30 p.m.
