Getting breakfast in Fullerton

Indecisive about what to eat this morning? Start the day off properly with one of these quintessential California breakfast items: the breakfast burrito or the omelet.

Don Carlos Mexican Restaurant of Buena Park, also known as Athenian Burgers #3, currently holds the title for the best breakfast burrito in all of Orange County according to the OC Weekly. They have held this title since 2014 and just received the honor once again this year. Luckily, within a five minute walk from the student center, one can get a replica of the illustrious burrito at Don Carlos’ Fullerton location.

What separates this burrito from the rest of the pack? Geometry, flavor and balance to name a few of the reasons. At Don Carlos you will have the option of meatless, bacon, sausage, ham or the only choice for the true gastronome, “The Suicide Burrito,” which is a triple meat trifecta.

Regardless of meat preferences, strap in and prepare to indulge in a perfectly melded cylinder of Mexican and American cultural fusion. The cooks at Don Carlos know one thing for sure and that is precision.

Starting off with a delicious flour tortilla, the cooks manage to create a silky layer of eggs and place that between a strata of bright orange cheddar cheese. Moving to the burrito’s core, a buttery mass of toasted hash browns and a medley of meats are mixed and then placed appropriately in yellow butcher paper to protect from the liquid gold that awaits you during the last two bites of your journey.

Beyond the burrito itself, what really sends this iteration to the top of the charts is the sauce. There are two impeccable choices: Red or Green. One can’t go wrong with either choice and can order some of each sauce to take home. The sauce is simply that good.

In case one isn’t in the mood for a breakfast burrito, fear not.

Within a five minute drive from campus one can partake in the tastiest sit down breakfast experience in the city at Early Bird Café.

Early Bird opened its doors to the public in late 2012 to many glowing reviews. While they have their own contemporary interpretations of almost every American diner breakfast item such as eggs benedict or chicken and waffles, what truly sets this breakfast nook in first place is their omelets.

Why omelets? The egg happens to be one of the most common dishes to cook improperly. Regardless if you are a home or professional cook, eggs dishes get messed up every day.

Early Bird Café makes no mistakes in the realm of egg cookery and as such should be respected for this feat. Once you’ve tasted an omelet of this caliber you will in all honesty be changed for the better. The next time you’re in the mood for some eggs you must put Early Bird at the top of the list. No longer do you need to go to a fancy French restaurant to get an omelet that would make any French chef proud.

The suicide burrito will cost you $6.95 while the omelet sells for $9.50.
