The Career and Transfer Mentorship Program is founded and directed by Associated Students treasurer Chris Lim, who, for now, will be focusing on the project solo. Nakota Arrona, a student at Fullerton College and chair of A.S. Curriculum and Education committee, will be joining the project in the coming weeks.
The program will be a monthly seminar session for students to find more information about a specific major and network with professors.
The transfer mentorship program will have professors talk with students about their desired professions and what relevant degrees the student should be aiming for, as well as the requirements needed to obtain those degrees.
The seminars may also have the added benefits of possible job opportunities available, study sessions, tutoring opportunities or internships with teachers in the student’s desired field or degree.
There are about two dozen professors slated to speak in eight to nine forums in the spring semester. They will all be “transfer success” oriented and involve faculty and administration, who will be working closely with A.S.
So far, the times and dates of when the seminars will take place are tentative and will be based on the professors’ schedules. The two dozen professors will most likely cover the subject boardly, from mathematics to sciences to arts.
No definitive information has been released yet on plans to expand the program further. This is because A.S., the district and the college board are currently undergoing negotiation and discussion at several levels. But, the program is slated to begin during the spring semester, which begins Feb. 1.
The first seminar to help kick off the program was in November. At the Law and Paralegal Mentorship Forum, held Nov. 5, professors Steven Dayton and Calvert gave a one hour talk about their experiences in law school. They each shared what a student can achieve with a paralegal or law degree and gave advice on what that field is like and how to further their careers.
Chris Lim is working hard to give FC students access and information to his new mentorship program and will be focusing most of his time on the details during winter session and after finals week.
