From the moment you walk into the Layer Cake Bakery, you are greeted with a large glass display of rows and rows of mouthwatering pastries. Their menu ranges from delicious cakes, sandwiches, colorful macaroons and plated breakfasts.
The inside of the bakery resembles a refurbished warehouse with the high ceilings, spacious rooms and brick walls. The words eat, drink, and indulge, decorate the walls of the bakery. The atmosphere offers many tables that allow for a relaxed environment to enjoy your meal in peace.
The breakfast menu ranges from many types of omelets, french toasts and grilled sandwiches. Breakfast is served from 8am-11am on the weekdays and from 8am-3pm on the weekends. For lunch, the menu includes many different affordable meals of sandwiches, salads and soups.
“My favorite is the seared tuna sandwich, it’s so good,” said Jasmin Iz, a frequent customer.
In the few months that it has been open, it has already earned itself some loyal customers.
“I usually come in for their breakfast. Their pecan and banana french toast fills me up,” said Jered Masad, a weekly visitor to the bakery.
The desserts are made from scratch and baked right there in the bakery. Their wide selection of desserts makes this place a great stop after having dinner at one of the many restaurants in the nearby area.
The bakery is a family owned business run by two sisters with a passion for eating, traveling and creating their own recipes. Their baking roots go as far back as the late 1960’s when their grandmother ran her own bakery. Many of the recipes used have been passed down from her. But there are also some that the sisters have created with themselves.
Liz Karnaga, one of the sisters, is most proud of the pies they make there.
“We make ours from scratch, and pick the best seasonal fruits for the fillings. I’m addicted to our strawberry rhubarb pie,” said Karnaga.
With one of the owners being gluten intolerant, the sisters were inspired to make many of their treats gluten free. Their lunch menu even includes vegan and vegetarian options in order to accommodate many of their customers.
Along with delicious meals, Layer Cake offers organic tea and coffee.
Layer Cake Bakery is located in downtown Fullerton on the corner of Commonwealth and Harbor. They are open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
When Karnaga was asked what she would like to tell all of her customers, she kept it simple, “Enjoy life, eat dessert first.”
