Dog lovers and their canine counterparts attended the dedication and unveiling of “Valor” in Anaheim on Sunday at La Palma Dog Park.

Erected in order to honor all police service dogs, “Valor” was inspired by the beloved retired canine officer Bruno who was injured severely in the line of duty.

The project was spearheaded by Anaheim City Council member Kris Murray and funded privately through community donations for $25,000.

“This reflects the beauty, bravery, courage and valor of our K-9 unit,” Murray said.

The crowd got a special treat at the ceremony as Bruno and his partner Officer R.J. Young along with other Anaheim Police K-9 units were introduced while the DJ on hand played the funk classic George Clinton’s “Atomic Dog.”

The statue was molded into exquisite detail by Northern California artist Susan Bahary who was on hand for the dedication.

“It took 10 months to complete,” Bahary said.

The statue is the first installment of two commemorative statues that will grace Anaheim and pay respect to the K-9 enforcement efforts. A second statue in the works will be erected at Olive Hills Park.

“I wanted to depict the bravery in the hearts of Anaheim’s heroic canines who along with their canine officers do so much to keep us safe and free,” Bahary said.
