Being that Citrus is a non-conference match, the Hornets victory points won’t go toward their road to playoffs.
Although their win won’t help their conference standings, The Hornets are slowly coming together and playing with the passion and connection they wanted from the beginning of the season.
The breaking of their loosing streak gave not only the girls but the coaches even more confidence for the rest of their season.
Goalie Marla Debarros played her first whole game as a Hornet and had 8 saves through the match but fell 1 goal short from a shut out in the second half.
The goal by the Citrus Owls was made by Freshman forward Devin Bagwell by a direct free kick at the 62nd minute of the game.
The Hornets had several leading scorers during the 90 minute match.
Freshman forward Marlena Carrillo added a goal to her stats as she chipped it over Owl goalie Britni Armas in the 84th minute of the game.
Along with Carrillo’s goal she also had an assist that led Freshman midfielder Diana Ordaz with a finishing header in the back of the net at the 23rd minute of the match.
Another goal was added to the scoreboard at the 37th minute of the game when Pamela Zavaleta scored on a solo shot with none other than her non-dominate foot.
This was Zavaleta’s third game and first goal from recovering a concussion and face injury that was cause during a preseason game against El Camino.
“It feels great to be back playing, but in order to start winning in conference we need to have more chemistry as a team,” Zavaleta said.
Assistant coach for the Hornets Cristian Rus was especially excited for the girls on their win.
According to Rus, it was clearly noticed that these girls played with passion, energy, and battled for every single ball, giving them the outcome that the team has been wanting.
“The girls must continue to play with heart, give 110 percent and be a professional when they wear the Fullerton College jersey every game,” Rus said.
