Quibi is a new platform that brings a combination of Snapchat and short movies, all into one.
Created by Jeffery Katzenberg, the co-founder of DreamWorks animation, Quibi is a subscription-based streaming platform and has been advertised to provide scripted and unscripted content delivered straight to the viewer’s cell phone.
The app can be downloaded on the Apple App store and Google Play store. The content spans between a wide range, from fictional series to current news as well as sports highlights. Quibi has also employed the likes of Liam Hemsworth, LeBron James, Jennifer Lopez and other A-list actors.
Quibi plans to launch with an installment of 50 shows and release another 175 original shows. They also plan on releasing 8500 quick bites of content within the first year of opening.
The subscription starts at $4.99 a month for ad-supported viewing. Users can spend $7.99 a month to have an ad free experience. There is a 90 day free trial available for new users.
With other big competitors, like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and HBO, Quibi is the next in a line of digital streaming platforms. The question is if it will hold up against the heavy hitters in the industry? That is yet to be seen.
Katzenberg told CNN Business in March, “We probably have more in between moments now than we ever had before, because we’re all locked in our homes.” Katzenberg continued, “Super premium Hollywood quality content is going to resonate now more than ever.”
With an overall rating of 3.7 out of five on the Apple App Store, it begs the question, could it be getting off on the right foot. With some of the less flattering reviews, people seem to be frustrated with the quality content as well as the user ability of the app on some cell phones. All reviews together paint Qubi in a good light and sell the product enough for the casual user to be interested in at least the free trial.
